How EMI Works

What is EMI?

EMI is a fixed periodic payment used to repay a loan over a chosen tenure. Each payment normally contains both principal and interest.

The formula

For a standard reducing-balance loan, EMI = P × r × (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n − 1), where P is principal, r is the monthly interest rate, and n is the number of payments.

How to use the calculator

Enter the loan principal, annual interest rate, and tenure. Compare the monthly EMI with total payment and total interest before making a borrowing decision.

EMI versus total repayment

A lower monthly EMI does not automatically mean a cheaper loan. Compare the monthly payment with total repayment and total interest across different tenures.

Why tenure changes the trade-off

Increasing tenure spreads principal over more payment periods. This can improve monthly affordability while increasing the amount of interest paid.

Worked example

Suppose a borrower compares the same principal and rate over two tenures. The shorter option normally has a higher scheduled payment but fewer interest periods; the longer option normally has a lower payment but a higher total interest cost.

What to compare before borrowing

Look beyond EMI alone. Check the interest rate, total repayment, fees, prepayment rules, and whether the payment remains affordable under a less favorable scenario.

Using the calculator

Enter principal, annual rate, and tenure, then compare the result with an alternative tenure or rate.
